Re: Charlie Case and The Fatal Glass of Beer

Yep, it was definitely Charlie Case's song, and he was indeed a blackface comedian. I believe there is a recording of him singing it. I remember in the early 70's the elderly actor Burt Mustin was part of a Barbershop Quartet and they sang this song as part of their act and they did it on THE TONIGH...

Re: Scott Eyman's John Wayne Book

It's very important to keep The Duke in the public eye at least every decade....otherwise my childhood will start to seem pointless. Now to find out why no one is talking about John Payne lately? Well, if it's a help, we saw John Payne on an episode of WHATS MY LINE this weekend. Scott told me the ...

NFPF/EYE Institute Amsterdam Film Repatriation

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/moviesnow/la-et-mn-silent-american-movies-amsterdam-20140328,0,7141573.story#axzz2xSGqrTHv Their "Sherlock Holmes of Celluloid" needed a Dr. Watson apparently. The first film mentioned, the "long-missing" MICKEYS CIRCUS (1927) with Mick...

Re: imd(um)b (was Crackpot Film History)

Todays classic comes from the Lila Lee bio: "Lila's erratic screen career was triggered by severe bouts with what was euphemistically referred to as tuberculosis, but whispered to be the results of acute alcoholism." Tuberculosis is not a "euphemism" for alcoholism, it's a "...

Re: imd(um)b (was Crackpot Film History)

Another bon-mot of wisdom, this time from their Harry Langdon bio: "Langdon went back on the vaudeville circuit, but in 1929 he was hired by the Hal Roach Studios to make shorts. The talkies were not kind to Langdon, whose voice allegedly was damaged by a quack treating him for a childhood illn...

imd(um)b (was: Crackpot Film History)

Another Classic, from the Buster Keaton imd(um)b bio: "His last film work was The Railrodder (1965), but because it was such a short film it was released before other movies, like A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966), which had completed filming before "The Railrodder"...

Re: Crackpot Film History

Also from imd(um)b's Arbuckle bio:

"Roscoe wrote his own stories first, tried them out and then devised funny twists to generate the laughs."

Have you ever seen such cogent comedy construction commentary?

Re: LOVE THY NEIGHBOR (1940) Jack Benny Fred Allen

And it was written by Benny's radio writers at the time, Morrow and Beloin. I though that the Field's segment of TALES OF MANHATTAN (42) was their first stab at movie writing. They worked on this and BUCK BENNY RIDES AGAIN of the same year. Those two films were the only ones of Benny's that were ve...
