Re: Brother Theodore/Jerry Lewis/Merv Griffin (1966)

Once Brother Theodore's Lps from the 1960s started showing up on YouTube it became clearer to me than ever that he was a masterful performer: Some of those rants he appeared to do spontaneously on Letterman actually can be heard word for word on the LPs. I always figured he was performing but never ...

Re: Reconstructed version of Chaplin's THE PROFESSOR

The most interesting part is that we always assumed that Prof. Bosco was meant to be a completely different character. Now we know it's an older Charlie beaten down by poverty. Kind of chilling. I agree that's how the footage is used in the compiled film, but isn't it still a mystery as to why this...

Re: Is Spencer Bell G. Howe Black?

Well there's no mention of Mchenry in the Barnes book, but there is a picture of Sidney Rink. I attached the image on the off chance someone recognizes him as an unidentified film performer. And this link to the Feb 23, 1930 Film Daily indicates that Mchenry appeared in a sound short: The Big Jewel ...

Re: Is Spencer Bell G. Howe Black?

I have Barnes' autobiography packed away somewhere, I'll see if it has any info on Mchenry. The earliest I see him with Barnes is 1917. There are ads in Billboard in 1920 trying to get Mchenry to rehire with Sidney Rink as a 'mule rider'. Rink was an animal trainer for Barnes at various times and de...

Re: Is Spencer Bell G. Howe Black?

Is this the Curtis McHenry you're looking for? I don't know him well enough for a visual id. I thought this could be a contender as he's in Los Angeles, and seems to be doing non cinema work at this period (1929). The person in this image also seems to be the Curtiss McHenry who was a comedian with ...

Re: New book on vaudeville career of Marx Brothers - October pub

Just a heads up that Rob Bader appears this week on Gilbert Gottfried's May 15 Podcast . It's ninety minutes long and moves along rather well since the two interviewers know the subject fairly well themselves and examine more than just the usual questions. Then again since this is Gilbert, he occasi...

Late to the game but I'll give this an endorsement too. I've had it for about a year and a half and never tire of flipping thru it. Very thorough. I especially like the discussion of the living room couch as scene for romantic encounters.

Re: Nitrateville Nitwittery: WHEN COMEDY WAS KING

3,000! That makes me even more appreciative of the effort/risk people are putting into these releases. I saw Mack Sennett on an episode of Kovacs' Take A Good Look this morning and when they showed some fuzzy washed out clips it made me think about how lucky we are with the quality of what comes out...

Re: New book on vaudeville career of Marx Brothers - October pub

The book has published and an initial review in the Wall Street Journal has caused Amazon's entire stock to sell out. In the mean time you can order directly from the publisher at a reduced price of $25 via this website set up for the book. It's worth checking the site out just to see the photo of t...
