Re: Slapsticon 2010 Titles
I have requested a $99 rate for the week of Monday July 12 through Sunday July 18. The HI's group sales staff changes with alarming rapidity, and the person I was dealing with a just few weeks ago is no longer there. I've put in a new request to the sales manager and am awaiting a response. There is...

Re: Guardian: Collector finds unseen Charlie Chaplin film in tin
Anyone who believes this film is worth £3,000 to £40,000, please contact me: I've got some shares of Al Detlaff Enterprises I'd like to sell you. Does anyone at AMPAS know how to contact these guys? If the grand premiere were held at Slapsticon '10, the resulting publicity in the Washington Post wou...

Re: Trying to Recall a Sennett Title
Must be something else Gary. I once burned down Richard's house and a year later flooded out his new house in an unfortunate bathroom malfunction. Surprisingly, he still invites me over for screenings when I'm in town, though I am required to wear restraints while watching films.

Re: "The last roundup" for silent comedians?
There are two nice late Max Davidson cameos on archive.org, just waiting to be downloaded to your desktop or iPhone. One is a well-done B-western starring Johnny Mack Brown called Rogue of the Range (1936) . Just as in Roamin' Wild, Max plays a travelling salesman. He wanders onto the scene at 22:37...

Re: Under the Radar
Many of the Shemp Howard Vitaphones are hilarious. Some, like "His First Flame" (1935) are played out in front of stage flats that don't even try to convey the illusion of reality. Shemp's Vita shorts, along with Arbuckle's are long overdue for the box set treatment. Or at least some scree...

Why the Decrease in Film Quality When Sound Came In?
Watching Speedy and Welcome Danger back to back on TCM was a perfect illustration of this. Speedy looked like it was shot yesterday. Crystal sharp, with rock steady registration and perfect exposure. Then Welcome Danger came on: soft, grainy and flickering exposure. Both were presumably shot on panc...
