Re: Body IDs please

Al Hill is to the right of Billy Gilbert in the shot from A SUBMARINE PIRATE. I'm pretty positive this interior would have been shot in a Keystone stage, not on location.

Re: Hallroom Boys at the TCM Film Festival

That sounds like a new method at getting previously neglected film preserved. The next time a company wants to re-restore "Gone With The Wind" for the umpteenth time have someone at the archive splice in reels and reels of silent films to the back end. Clark Gable walks out on Scarlett an...

Hallroom Boys at the TCM Film Festival

A segment for the Hallroom Boys comedy A CHILI ROMANCE (1921) with Sid Smith and Harry McCoy got shown during the Fragments program at the TCM Film Festival in Hollywood this weekend. It's about 200-250 ft., in which Sid and Harry survive a train wreck, and then encounter a Villa-type Mexican revolu...

Re: Raymond Griffith

By the way, YOU'D BE SURPRISED--which Richard showed at this year's Midwinter Comedy Festival--might be my favorite of his starring ones, besides PATHS TO PARADISE and HANDS UP. It benefits from titles by Robert Benchley and a scenario by Jules Furthman.

Re: Raymond Griffith

Here's a list surviving prime Griffith features (and his one surviving "raspie" short) that I've seen. White Tiger (1923) Changing Husbands (1924) Open All Night (1924) Miss Bluebeard (1925) Paths to Paradise (1925) The Night Club (1925) Hands Up! (1926) Trent's Last Case (1929) The Sleep...

Re: Raymond Griffith

The missing reel doesn't really affect PATHS TO PARADISE negatively (which you'll understand when you see it). It's definitely the best Griffith, and also the one that wears the best on repeated viewings, though Betty Compson's contribution to it cannot be overestimated. The one thing I will have to...

RIP Bowery Boy Buddy Gorman

RIP Charles "Buddy" Gorman--last of the "major" Bowery Boys (i.e. who appeared in more than 2 or 3 films). He replaced Bennie Bartlett as Butch for seven films in 1950-51, having earlier been an Eastside Kid in 1943-1945 (Skinny, Stinkie, Shorty, Danny and Sammy), and a Bowery Bo...

Re: Presenting NICKELODIA #3

Chris, this sounds like a great set! It's good to see those John R. Cumpson comedies coming out, because he is definitely an overlooked figure in early American comedy. And it was my pleasure identifying the various victims of Keystone mayhem--though there were so many victims, only the coroner can ...
