Re: Kevin Brownlow's 9.5 Vitagraph Show

If these films are so old and brittle, is it such a good idea to keep running them through a projector? I assume the cost of converting them to safety stock is out of the question. Why does everything have to cost so much? Did Blackhawk not once have a 2 reel condensed version of CAPTAIN BLOOD? And ...

"The Way of All Dress" is the American title of a different Chase film, "Charley Transgenders".

Come on, Jim. It plays as a modern day commentary on guns in America.

Servaes has a very stylized stage presence. I felt like I was in the 3rd row watching him.

Re: MY DREAM OF THE BIG PARADE (1926) Peerless Quartet

I was just reading of the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of Verdun taking place in Europe. Verdun lays in the renowned Western Front region. That battle raged for practically the entire year in 1916. To make matters worse, the Somme Offensive began in the summer of that year and waged on through...

Re: The Sid Caesar Imogene Coca Carl Reiner Howard Morris Re

Your link, Richard, lead me to an evening of re-visiting Caesars great work from his 50's programs. And yes, I did watch the HOLLYWOOD PALACE episodes where they hosted together. The pair open the program with a reworking of the American tourists in France skit, only this time they run into each oth...

This was better than I expected. I could see Carol Burnett playing the lead in the WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF parody.
It's too bad Caesar didn't stick to yearly TV specials like this rather than expending so much energy into another failed series.

Re: A 1912 Look at Los Angeles

At the time of this newsreel footage, L.A.'s population ranks 17th in the nation. That wide panning shot at the end shows a lot of undeveloped acreage beyond the downtown area. Within a decade the population would triple. And I read that the city opened it's first gas station in 1912. A harbinger of...

Re: Once Again, Up He pops........

That certainly is a familiar looking stance. Whenever Wayne reminisced about his beginnings in the movie industry, he was always rather fuzzy about actual titles he worked on. But Wayne was first and foremost a movie buff. You would think he would had remembered being an extra on WHAT PRICE GLORY an...

Re: Lost Charley Chase Comedy repremieres at Cinevent

Where was the print found? At a falafel stand on the Czech border? Underneath the melting Arctic ice floe? At another Midwest rummage sale? Regardless, what was it like to watch that short intact for the first time, Richard? Did you feel like you were watching an above average short, or perhaps a mi...
