Re: review of TOO MUCH JOHNSON at LACMA May 3, 2014

I was thinking of his numerous guest appearances on various comedy/variety programs and AFSR. Whenever there is a gap in the sequential broadcasting order of a particular program, more often than not it will be an episode that Welles was due to appear on. I do enjoy his appearances on those lighter...

Re: review of TOO MUCH JOHNSON at LACMA May 3, 2014

Thanks Pal. I've already been catching up with these files. I can't add much more to Richard's resounding praise except to add that this is a fun and witty homage to the era of the Nickelodeon. And there is no contempt or mocking derision displayed over the style of those early films. It is clear t...

Re: Silent "Our Gang" question (not the usual one)

Marvelous! And I just found, courtesy of Lantern, an article in the November 19, 1956 issue of BROADCASTING-TELECASTING that Onyx and Hal Roach Studios had filed suit against Tarbox, Film Classics, NBC and George Bagnall & Associates for pirating the Roach Pathés. "The suit claims Mssrs. T...

Re: MACK SENNETT COLLECTION COMMENTARY TRACKS and ERRATA

Ha! There was no room left for anything more than what we did! Seriously, the material took up 99% of the available space on every disc. (We needed a shoehorn to wedge in the PDF for Joe Adamson's essay.) No room for another thing, even if it was only wafer thin... That's right, I forgot, this was ...

Don Pardo RIP

I guess I'll start off the Passing Parade with this, although it would have fit in either Classic Radio ro Classic Television just as well. Don Pardo passed away Monday at his home in Tucson, Arizona: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/19/nyregion/don-pardo-the-voice-of-saturday-night-live-dies-at-96.ht...

LADY GODIVA (1911) Vitagraph

Here's an interesting early version of the historical legend, alas, utilizing the same hair-hiding-everything get-up Maureen O'Hara went for decades later, but an early Vitagraph Epic featuring Julia Swayne Gordon, Robert Gaillard, Kate Price (stop trembling, she doen't play Godiva), and Clara Kimba...

Re: MACK SENNETT COLLECTION VOL 1 Blu-Ray

Up to four five-star reviews today, and I particularly like a quote from Rift Corbett (who joined here some time ago, hello Rift, feel free to post something once in awhile): "Let's take "Fatty and Mabel Adrift" by far the best it has ever looked on home video and most importantly it ...

Re: Laurel and Hardy on Stage book / CD set

Quietly released and now ready for online order, apparently: http://www.laurelandhardyonstage.com/ Uli I can highly recommend this book to one and all, it's chock full of rare photos from their Denmark Tour of 1947, it's delightful to hear not one, but TWO audio versions of the "Driver's Licen...
