Re: Bobby Burns in 1920?

Who was Bobby Burns making movies for in 1920? We have an unidentified Burns comedy that I thought was a latter day Vim comedy.... the door on the doctor's office says something like "LOT A. VIM". However a close look at the license on the car shows a 1920 NEW JERSEY plate, obviously elim...

Re: A Chapter From My Upcoming Book on Glenn Tryon

Bob Birchard wrote:Just to be a cranky nit-picker, shouldn't it be "A Chapter on Glenn Tryon From My Upcoming Book"? The other way it sounds like the book is about Glenn Tryon alone. Also, I found there was one "too" too few in the posted text.

Yeah, yeah, yeah........

Re: Vaudeville resources?

From the Piqua Leader-Dispatch, 02/07/1914 http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc328/PatheLehrman1950/SwainsRatsandCats.jpg Which brings to mind two things: Was Mack Swain related to the Swain of Swain's Rats and Cats? And the old Brother Theodore quote:"You know you can train a rat? You can sp...

Re: _City Lights_ and Panchromatic film

So what's the deal with the poor contrast of this film? I know this was CC's first picture that was shot in the new Pan film. Every print I have ever seen is dark, and has very muddy blacks, and I was always disappointed that this film never looked as good to me as The Gold Rush or The Circus . The...

Correcting Yair Solan on FRESH LOBSTER

Hey Yair, I saw over on that other silent comedians forum that you posted some info on FRESH LOBSTER from the Silent Era site. I hate to say it is incorrect as well. FRESH LOBSTER is sort of an mystery film that may have never had a theatrical release, but it was definitely not made in 1928, nor in ...

Re: Charley Bower's collaborator

Fair enough, Godfather. It certainly wasn’t my contention that Bowers was some kind of solitary genius who only needed Muller to thread the camera! But I think it goes too far in the other direction to describe Bowers’ background as “only in drawing and animation” while Muller was the “total techni...

Re: Charley Bower's collaborator

Interesting that Muller had no background as an animator - which raises the question about the division of labor on the Bowers films. Could one assume that Muller was responsible simply for the live-action components of the films, while Bowers handled the stop-motion sequences? (Perhaps not; after ...

Re: "In the Movies" (1922)

Does anyone know if Snub Pollard's "In the Movies" (1922, dir: Charles Parrott) survives? (And, if so, where it is available?) Thanks - Yair There's a lovely 35mm print at LOC, and there are several 16mm prints in private collections, apart from it's appearing as the opening sequence in R...

Re: Hallroom Boys in "Conjuror James"

"Conjuror James" - That's the title on a Pathescope print. Film takes place in the Casino Theatre in Little Puddleton, where the boys are part of the Trimble Tourers. The show consists of some magic tricks, followed by some trick shooting, and culminating in a melodramatic piece that take...
