Re: What did E. W. Hammons mean?

Thanks, Richard, for explaining the issue better than Hammons himself! Actually, I have your excellent essay on Educational from Classic Images in a stack of papers next to my desk (and weren't those essays supposed to be anthologized at some point?). Anyway, the distinction between production and d...

What did E. W. Hammons mean?

Since Rob Stone's been posting such nice Educational press sheets of late, here’s an industry/economics-oriented question on the same company: why exactly was Educational Pictures left out of the mergers ca. 1926-1927 which saw the major studios entering into distribution arrangements with the leadi...

Re: Mack Sennett's Fun Factory news

Wow. A great cover … and 300-400 photos! That’s simply extraordinary. It looks like McFarland is really giving this the “chef d’oeuvre” treatment it deserves. Good stuff, Brent.

No, I mean the guy dressed as a bathing beauty. Only eight women are named, but there are nine lying on the ground, and the one in the middle looks the spitting image of Rock Hudson.

Re: Babes in Toyland/March of the Wooden Soldiers

I don't think it has anything to do with the Disney movie. According to Richard Lewis Ward's history of the Hal Roach Studios, the renaming took place when four Laurel and Hardy features from the 1930s were reissued in the late 1940s, each with a new name. The Devil's Brother, Babes in Toyland, Bonn...

Re: Charley Bower's collaborator

Fair enough, Godfather. It certainly wasn’t my contention that Bowers was some kind of solitary genius who only needed Muller to thread the camera! But I think it goes too far in the other direction to describe Bowers’ background as “only in drawing and animation” while Muller was the “total technic...
