Re: The Death of Lonesome Luke

Don't forget that Luke wasn't completely dead in 1917, as Roach tried to resuscitate him in 1921 with Gaylord Lloyd in the role. This group, that included THE LUCKY NUMBER, A ZERO HERO, TROLLEY TROUBLES, and ROUGH SEAS, really put the nails in Luke's coffin.

Re: A New John Wayne/Lloyd Hamilton spotting

Yeah, that's definitely "the Duke." Years later Wayne wanted to rework this bit in THE SEARCHERS, but Ford hated Jack Miller.

New films on the National Film Preservation Foundation site

Hello all Wanted to mention that the National Film Preservation Foundation posted three new American films on their site today. They are the Happy Hooligan cartoon A SMASHUP IN CHINA (1919), and two comedies - WHO'S WHO (1910) and WHEN CIDERVILLE WENT DRY (1915). They were preserved by a combo of th...

Re: THE CHINK (1921) Eddie Boland

There is a complete nitrate print of this at EYE Film in Amsterdam. I've seen a number of frame scans from it - a couple of which were used as illustrations in LAME BRAINS AND LUNATICS (pgs. 289 and 302).

Thanks for posting this Dave. MoMA has material on this, and although it's been a couple of decades since I've seen it, I think that they basically have the second reel.

Pal's in it too. He's the one with the fancy collar that pulls off Malcolm's diaper. They'd work together in some of the Big Boy shorts.

Richard - thanks for posting this. The dude that the cook falls in love with is a youngish Stuart Holmes, who appeared in other Powers shorts at the time like THE WOMAN HATER ('10) with Pearl White (link below)

Re: The Lost Laugh: E-Zine and Blog

Hi Tommie - MONSIEUR was found at the Cineteca Nazionale in Rome (along with the 1920 Aubrey / Hardy MAIDS AND MUSLIN). Both were recently shown in MoMA's TO SAVE AND PROJECT festival, with MONSIEUR being about 7 minutes of chunks, which includes one early example of what would become a Hal Roach bo...

A Near Max?

Recently, while researching the silent character actress May Foster I came across an interesting bit of Max Davidson info. This is an announcement from A. H. Giebler's News of Los Angeles and Vicinity column from the February 15, 1919 Moving Picture World (pg. 881): "SULLIVAN PRODUCTIONS The Su...
