Re: Is this absolutely necessary?
I could easily imagine that "The Freak" would work as an animated feature. I wonder if Tim Burton ever visits this site.

Re: Is this absolutely necessary?
I would argue that the involvement of Bud Abbott gave a patina of authenticity to the Abbott & Costello cartoons, and that The Three Stooges cartoons were a legitimate project, employing not only the vocal talents of Howard, Fine, and DeRita, but also live-action wrap-arounds, constituting new f...

Re: Hal Roach galore on TCM in January
Thank you, Richard, for shedding some much-needed light on this particular moment in history. At least half of these shorts are every bit as good as other classic Roach films from the same period. If Langdon jumped ship to shine brighter than the Roach lot in The Thirties, he may have been his own w...

Re: Hal Roach galore on TCM in January
Gary, I don't think the audio discs that accompanied those two Langdon titles have been recovered, but someone must have mute prints. I always thought it would be worth making silent versions for the home movie market, but unless someone did that in The Fifties, I don't think anyone would embark on ...

Re: Hal Roach galore on TCM in January
Well, we are halfway through January, and I'm beginning to suspect that there will be no Irvin S. Cobb shorts.

Re: Is CITY LIGHTS a great comedy?
In my mind... no. Great film? Sure. Great drama? Sure. Great comedy? Well... not really. Some funny moments, but it doesn't hold up well under repeated viewings, especially in the context of the dramatic elements, that IMHO overwhelm it. The ending is NOT a barrel of laughs. And being blind CAN be ...

Re: Holiday Shorts
Richard M. Roberts wrote I guess you could use Max Davidson's PASS THE GRAVY(1928) for Thanksgiving, although it's a chicken, not a turkey, or the Keystone short A BIRDS A BIRD (1915) with Chester Conklin. Thank you, Richard. I just watched PASS THE GRAVY, and it works fine. (Once they're at the tab...

Holiday Shorts
On Thanksgiving, I will be showing "Jus Passin' Through" and "The Courtship Of Miles Sandwich" to my guests, both of course, included on "Becoming Charley Chase". (This will doubtless be their first exposure to Thanksgiving comedy beyond "Planes, Trains, & Auto...

Re: Chaplin Time Traveler?
I must apologise to everyone in this forum; I'm afraid that was me on a recent visit to 1928. I frequently visit this time period in the hope that I will procure a print of "Heart Trouble". On this last trip, I thought I would check in back of every theatre, and root around in the dumpster...
