Re: Is CITY LIGHTS a great comedy?
Come on Fellas! The opening surprise appearance in the park, the suicide attempt, the night on the town (in fact, all of the scenes involving the millionaire) the boxing match and my favorite gag in the film; trolling for cigarette butts while driving a limousine. It is a comedy. All of the so-call...

Is CITY LIGHTS a great comedy?
In my mind... no. Great film? Sure. Great drama? Sure. Great comedy? Well... not really. Some funny moments, but it doesn't hold up well under repeated viewings, especially in the context of the dramatic elements, that IMHO overwhelm it. The ending is NOT a barrel of laughs. And being blind CAN be a...

Re: Could "Lost Keaton" lead to "Lost Langdon"
I knew that would get David's attention. What I keep finding are reviewers who say that Keaton is visibly fighting the effects of alcoholism onscreen throughout the Educationals. Someone online says he looks drunk in TARS AND STRIPES. I believe they are projecting. The effects of booze ARE very not...

Re: Chaplin Time Traveler?
Okay, this takes the cake as the stupidest hoax/controversy/ you name it. The woman is obviously shielding her face from the camera with her purse and either talking to the cameraman or the person in front of her, or even just rambling nonsensically to herself (the way you used to identify looneys ...

Re: First review I've seen of "Chaplin at Keystone"
As for the aptly named Tillie’s Nightmare, although it is not the usual pots and pans rattling as can be expected from Ken Winokur’s Alloy Orch, it is a unsubtle and rather overbearing score, trying sometimes way too hard to make musical jokes sometimes at the expense of the film, it reminds me of ...

Re: Updated info on Sherlock Jr/Three Ages Release
From Kino site -- Widely regarded as one of the most visually inventive silent comedies ever made, SHERLOCK JR. offers fast-paced slapstick as well as a brilliant deconstruction of the filmmaking process. Keaton stars as a movie theatre projectionist who dreams of becoming a super-sleuth and, in one...

Re: Footage will be restored to Kino Blu-ray of SHERLOCK JR.
A baby hitting the street is a rather uneasy thought, perhaps even in the Cruel and Unusual Comedy series! But anyways, specs are now out on amazon: SHERLOCK, JR.: Music by The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra in 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround and 2.0 Stereo, Music by The Club Foot Orchestra, Vintage...

Now you know how I felt about Raymond Griffith...
I also think Eddie Cantor's 1924 sound short bought silent comedy three more years.
