Charley Bower's collaborator
Over the years there hasn't been a lot of information available on comedian/animator Charley Bowers, and even less on his long-time partner and collaborator Harold L. Muller, who worked with him on his live action comedy shorts and up until at least the puppet film WILD OYSTERS ('41). All IMDB (for ...

Re: Hallroom Boys in "Conjuror James"
Hi Brent I've found a little bit of info about Gilbert Wells. He was a musical comedy performer who died in 1935. His Variety obit says he "was well-known in vaude here and in London as member of the team of Lloyd and Wells, and later in the team of Wells and Brady." His Broadway appearanc...

Oops - for the name I've seen connected I meant to write Gilbert Wells, not Gilbert Williams.

Re: Hallroom Boys in "Conjuror James"
Hi guys I've pulled out my very fuzzy copy of CONJUROR JAMES (gotten from Bill Sprague) and taken a fresh look. It's definitely Sid Smith, and Big Joe Roberts plays Trimble the owner of the theatre. Don't recognize who's playing Sid's partner. It isn't George Williams (Zip Monberg), Jimmie Adams, or...

This is probably no help whatsoever, but MoMA seems to have some post-print Youngson material. Their print of WHY GIRLS SAY NO is missing exactly the footage that Youngson used in one of the comps (right now can't remember which one).

Re: Now *Here's* an Unusual Question
You're right we should say "accused pedophile" in regards to Meins. In fact, I think in the note he left for his family he said the reason for killing himself was because he was German, and he felt that he wouldn't get a fair trial because of anti-German feelings at the time. Maybe there w...

Re: Now *Here's* an Unusual Question
Hi Chris I've never heard of James Parrott being gay, and he was married. In Randy Skretvedt's LAUREL AND HARDY there's a picture (pg 297 in the paperback edition) of Babe Hardy, and his wife Myrtle with Parrott and his wife Ruby at the 1936 Academy Awards (although they are sitting next to pedophil...

Thanks for sharing the chapter. Can't wait to see the whole book. Any ballpark for when it may be out?

Re: An Essay on Vitagraph Comedies
Hi Chris Yeah, there was definitely an overlap. MoMA has WHICH WAY DID HE GO? ('13) which has Bunny and Flora Finch as the father and mother of Lillian Walker. She's in love with Wally Van, but Flora won't hear of it and insists she marries Hughie Mack. Bunny wants Wally so he helps the couple elope...
