Re: Silent "Our Gang" question (not the usual one)
Reviving another ancient thread, I can now state that I indeed have found a true Hal Roach print from Onyx Pictures! A print of THE MYSTERIOUS MYSTERY that I picked up awhile back has an Onyx Pictures THE END title on it! A nice print, with original opening and inter-titles, but the replaced Onyx en...

Re: Orson Welles plays Falstaff on THE DEAN MARTIN SHOW (196
I would hazard a guess that Orson was among Deans annual twice-yearly guests for the duration of the shows run. And even afterwords. Many of those same guests ended up on Dean's silly Roasts in the '70's -- including Welles. Welles had met Greg Garrison back in the forties when Garrison was a teena...

Re: Cinevent Notes Past: MISSISSIPPI (1935) with W. C. Field
Ron Fields was already busy humanizing his great-grandfather back in the mid-70's when his book came out. And he probably had a rougher road to hoe at that time since WC Fields was at the height of his revival popularity, his films played constantly in the major markets and his personae was known b...

Re: Cinevent Notes Past: MISSISSIPPI (1935) with W. C. Field
Part of the problem with both Curtis's Spencer Tracy and James Whale books was that he was writing about people who were frequently assholes, you just really don't want to spend that close a company with those guys. Yes, totally. Tracy, in particular, came across as an unlikeable bore. But, Curtis....

Re: Cinevent Notes Past: MISSISSIPPI (1935) with W. C. Field
Aw, Jeez.....I hated Curtis' s Spencer Tracy and James Whale books. His style doesn't agree with me at all....both those books were a trawl for me. Is the Fields, perchance, any more readable? It is. Curtis is a very thorough researcher, but he is a little dry and humorless (he doesn't "get&qu...

Nitratevile Answer Dept: Two New 35mm Fragments to ID
The guy over at Nitratevile who has been scanning his 35mm nitrate fragments posted two new ones yesterday: http://nitrateville.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=18051 The ones that do not have Sessue Hayakawa, but have Otto Fries and Joseph Belmont appear to be from the 1928 Pathe' Smitty Comedy CAMPING ...

Re: Cinevent Notes Past: MISSISSIPPI (1935) with W. C. Field
Just re-watched Mississippi . Only he could make the repetition of the "...wall of human flesh..." business funnier each time he repeats it. I read the Louvish book a few years ago. Is this the best available on Fields? No, James Curtis's book, simply called W. C. FIELDS is the one to get...

Re: Cinevent Notes Past: MISSISSIPPI (1935) with W. C. Field
It's high time I re-watched this. My favourite Fields from the mid-30's would be You're Telling me and The Old Fashioned Way . Mississippi is a film I've seen once only. Incidentally, for any UK mafiosi on here, this set is the bizness: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-W-C-Fields-Collection-DVD/dp/B000V...

Orson Welles plays Falstaff on THE DEAN MARTIN SHOW (1967)
Thinking back on it now, I just may have been introduced to Orson Welles by his appearances on THE DEAN MARTIN SHOW. He made a number of them, and they were frequently nice classy bits like this one, imagine anyone performing Shakespeare on a Variety show, even if those still existed, on Network Tel...

MARX BROTHER TV COLLECTION Review
To quote one of Groucho Marx’s frequent generic punchlines to any sort of set-up, “well, it’s about time”. I received this set yesterday and it is everything one would hope for and more. An awful lot of folk out there these days probably only know the Marx Brothers from the bakers dozen movies they ...
