Re: Guardian: Collector finds unseen Charlie Chaplin film in tin

The Independent has also published some more details regarding the content and the sourcing for the Chaplin footage (mentioning outtakes from three Chaplins, but omitting RECREATION), and the documentary in the works about the find: http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/lost-cha...

Re: Some Paramount Sound Comedies

The LA Times ran a review of POST MORTEMS, MEET THE MISSUS and MUSIC HATH CHARMS, March 3/29. I wonder if the synopsis given for MEET THE MISSUS matches HUBBY'S NIGHT OUT. The usual caveat about spoilers below applies: CHRISTIE TALKING PLAYS PROVE RIOTOUSLY FUNNY Two-reel playlets contain surefire a...

Billy Franey on ebay

I don't know how rare stills are from Billy Franey's Reelcraft series, but I thought I'd point this one out. The film--is it THE CHEF?--must exist, at least in part, there's a frame from it on Mr. Farr's Mug Shots home page. Are the other actors known? The writing on the back is interesting, I can m...

Re: CAMERA Comedy Clippings, June 30, 1923

Hello Joe. For what it may be worth, I came across a stray item in a New York Times column in October 1923 referring to the completion of A TOUGH TENDERFOOT, later HORACE GREELEY, JR., naming June Marlowe playing opposite Langdon. Don Spears, who has a June Marlowe tribute site , agreed with me that...

Re: "The last roundup" for silent comedians?

I have a culpa or two of my own to apologize for. I looked at RANGE WARFARE courtesy of archive.org and Richard is quite right; if the cast listings are correct (and they seem to be for the other players) it's another Edward Boland here, a very tall, athletic looking guy in his late twenties or earl...

Re: "The last roundup" for silent comedians?

I'd just add to the thoughts expressed above that I reckon the uninhibited action and humour of silent comedy dovetailed nicely with the robust, elemental western. And I imagine that the comics were accustomed to working quickly and resourcefully, something no doubt appreciated by producers and dire...

Re: Becoming Mr. Laurel

This won't be a fresh observation, and I may have things skewed, but as a kid reading the various Roach interviews published and quoted from in the 70s, long before Randy Skretvedt's book appeared, I noticed that Roach made pointed mention of Stan Laurel's perceived failings as a story constructioni...

Re: BECOMING CHARLEY CHASE Review

“Wow” is right, it’s a whopping great set, beautifully presented, with the extraordinary generosity and dedication of David Kalat and colleagues everywhere in evidence, in the skilful reconstructions and the sharing of rare material and scholarship. Through THE PARROT CHASE and all the commentaries ...

Re: Candid Photo Archive

That's Helen Walton, Langdon's second wife, and these photos were syndicated by AP in early July, 1929, part of the announcement of their engagement and the finalization of his divorce from first wife Rose. Harry and Helen got hitched on July 27. Interesting that these shots are MGM publicity (vide ...
