Re: "Dutch" characters and anti-German backlash

Thanks for the feedback, all. Strong feelings aroused by the Great War and the sinking of the Lusitania make perfect sense, but supposedly Lehrman uttered these concerns circa February 1914, a good four months before Ferdinand was assassinated and the war broke out in Europe. I'm wondering if these ...

"Dutch" characters and anti-German backlash

Gene Fowler in his book FATHER GOOSE contends that at the formation of Sterling Comedies in early 1914, Henry Lehrman advised Ford Sterling to drop his Dutch character for fear of offending potential viewers harboring strong anti-German feelings. Accurate or not, is anyone aware of any sort of backl...

Re: WHAT IN THE WORLD? (1954) with Vincent Price

I has just turned 13 when I moved away from the Philadelphia television area in 1963, and I remember this show well, so it must have continued broadcasting into the early '60s. It was fascinating, or to me at least, with its Sherlock Holmesian approach to identifying ancient objects, with the big re...

Re: SOAPSUDS AND SIRENS - L-Ko 1917

Now that you mention it, no. Watching the film I never had the feeling that it was a man in drag, but that doesn't mean it wasn't.

SOAPSUDS AND SIRENS - L-Ko 1917

Can anyone identify the actress next to Harry Lorraine in this screen grab from L-Ko's SOAPSUDS AND SIRENS from 1917? She has a minor role as a character named Babee, with co-stars Walter Stephens, Bert Roach, and Gladys Varden. Merta Sterling's the only oversized actress I'm aware of working at L-K...

Re: Does Anyone Recognize This Location

Mystery solved, courtesy of John Bengston, who replied that we can read about the McKinley mansion in his book Silent Visions. They filmed in that neighborhood frequently, he said. The page from his book that he provided is posted below: http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc328/PatheLehrman1950/80dc...

Does Anyone Recognize This Location

In the 1927 Educational short WHO'S AFRAID?, Lupino Lane follows closely on the heels of a cop past a rather nice home (see below). Does anyone recognize this location and, if so, does it still exist? If memory serves, it's the same place Henry Lehrman used in PUNCH OF THE IRISH, but I'd have to re-...

Re: Counting Down to SLAPSTICON 2013

As I mentioned a few months back, I have a pesky 40th wedding anniversary that provides a conflict; she just wouldn't understand. But if one of those surprises includes a long thought lost Lehrman film, I think I'll slit my wrists.
