A 1912 Look at Los Angeles

Postby Richard M Roberts » Sun May 22, 2016 9:04 am

A really interesting early Imp travelogue of Los Angeles, an eye-opener for those who like to think of it as a sleepy west-coast burg before Hollywood was invaded by moviemakers, as you can see, downtown was a booming metropolis even then. Also nice views of the famous Alligator and Ostrich Farms, both silent comedy staple locations:

At the time of this newsreel footage, L.A.'s population ranks 17th in the nation. That wide panning shot at the end shows a lot of undeveloped acreage beyond the downtown area. Within a decade the population would triple. And I read that the city opened it's first gas station in 1912.
A harbinger of things to come.
