This is a kinescope fragment from TALK OF THE TOWN (Ed Sullivan Show) featuring Gertrude Lawrence, September 16, 1951. Theme of the program was a tribute to Oscar Hammerstein (who appears at the beginning with Richard Rodgers).
A very brief snippet is heard from "I Whistle A Happy Tune," then the image goes black but comes back for Miss Lawrence to sing the full number, "Getting To Know You."
The image is dupey, sound is muffled, but until recently even less of this excerpt was rumored to exist. Whatever we think of the poor A/V quality, this is reportedly the only visual record of this legendary performer's final triumph.
