Jack Burns RIP

No one lives forever -- except, perhaps, Shirley MacLaine. This is where we ring down the final curtain for Filmdom's finest.

Jack Burns RIP

Dammit, the funny people keep leavin'!

Though he never had the fame of his early partner George Carlin, Jack Burns was a solid comedy craftsman who worked brilliantly behind the scenes writing and creating lots of great comedy and helping shape a number of great shows, including THE MUPPET SHOW, on which he was head writer the first season and worked on for three years, he also wrote THE MUPPET MOVIE and other JImHenson movies and specials. He was also the announcer and writer on ABC's Saturday Night competitor FRIDAYS, and wrote for a number of television shows.

He had been a part of Chicago's Second City troupe, where he met his next partner, Avery Schreiber, and they performed on numerous variety shows in the late 1960's and 70's, also producing two comedy albums. Their most famous routine, which came out of their Second City performing, was the cab driver and his passenger, seen here on their ABC Summer replacement series:

Burns also tried to replace Don Knotts on THE ANDY GRIFFITH by playing Warren, another foolish deputy, but it was not a good mix and Burns left the series after 11 episodes.

But the one part he was born to play, and which for me he will always be immortal, was the Candy Butcher in THE NIGHT THEY RAIDED MINSKY'S (1968):

Rest in Peace Jack, ya' know what I mean?--yeah--huh--yeah--huh---yeah----huh----yeah----huh-----yeah..............
