Charlie Chaplin and Sally Rand

Postby Richard M Roberts » Mon May 15, 2017 3:51 pm

So we're watching THE SUNSET MURDER CASE (1938) the other night, and when star Sally Rand gives us her bubble dance, I sat through the dance thinking these moves look somewhat familiar, until it dawned on me, this is exactly what Chaplin is spoofing when he does the globe scene in THE GREAT DICTATOR.

Here's Sally's dance (go to 7:48):

And here's Charlie:

Good call! It makes you wonder if Chaplin immediately thought of the joke while watching the film.

I doubt Charlie ever saw the film, but it's quite likely he saw Sally do the bubble dance somewhere or another (gad, she did it for decades), and it was probably a parody he did at parties long before he did it in his film.
