Was the superimposition of dialogue text over the action authentic, or was it unique to small gauge prints? (Perhaps to make it more affordable by saving a few feet of film.) I'm just curious, because I haven't seen it to this degree before.

Quick question - I was watching a few 9.5mm films online (links from this site) - did 9.5mm film have one sprocket hole in the middle?

It did indeed, not the most practical system really, I've see more down the middle of the picture emulsion scratches on 9.5mm prints thanks to the sprocket and claw mechanisms, but there is a lot of rare stuff that was printed on the gauge.
