Silent Christie Paramount shorts

Postby Steve Massa » Mon Oct 19, 2009 10:30 pm

Without out a doubt my most pleasant assignment at the NY Public Library for the Performing Arts was being recently sent to inspect a ton of film-related materials that have been in storage for about a decade. While I was amazed at the huge quantity of still key books, studio pressbooks and scrapbooks, what really excited me (not mentioning two full albums of Victor Moore’s own stills from his Klever Comedies) were the key books for Paramount’s 1927 into the 1940s short subjects – books of 25 to 40 stills for each Christie comedy (silent and early sound), the Harold Lloyd-produced Edward Everett Horton shorts, Harry Langdon’s mid-1930s comedies produced and directed by Arvid E. Gillstrom, the Fleischer Superman cartoons, George Pal Puppettoons, and much more.

Since there’s not a lot of information on the silent Paramount Christie shorts that aren’t available today, I’ve gone through the stills and put together cast lists. Anyway, I’ve gathered all the info I could find into a filmography in the hopes that it would be valuable to anyone doing research on Christie Comedies (it could happen).

If anyone thinks it’s worthwhile I can also do this for the Edward Everett Horton shorts as well as a few oddities like ALICE IN MOVIELAND (’28), which starred Marion Mack (in a blonde wig) and had cameos by the likes of Ben Turpin and Hank Mann.

Steve,
Did they have any photos or information on the two Raymond Griffith Christie sound comedies from 1929, Post Mortems or The Sleeping Porch?

Steve,

Great listing! Many thanks!

Any chance of getting a similar list of the Christie-Paramount talkies?

Good stuff, Steve. Thanks for sharing it with us, and take a few minutes to give your eyes a rest.

Out of curiosity, what became of Harold Beaudine's career? The last film IMDb has for him was in '31, and he lived many years after that. Did sound do him in? Heaven knows his brother managed to eke out an existence well into the '60s.

Hi guys
Yeah, there are key books for POST MORTEMS and THE SLEEPING PORCH. Yesterday I finished going through all the sound Christie titles, so I'll organize all the material and post it here. It may take me a little while though, as I'm looking through all the unidentified shots from Victor Moore's Klever Komedies. I also found pressbooks for the mid-1920s Pathe shorts subjects (Sennett & Roach) that include musical cue sheets for accompanists.

Tom, never heard what happened to Harold Beaudine. I'm sure someone here knows.

Thank you Steve for posting this as there were several I did not have and the ones I did have had scant info. Unfortunately the MOTION PICTURE NEWS did not list every short released by a major studio. Al Christie should be the next big McFarland book on Si-com.

Now how about someone posting a complete Fox silent short filmography with stars, directors, and exact release dates. I am standing on one leg until someone posts this.

Steve, nice work, this is excellent! This sounds like a treasure trove of materials--thanks for going through it and compiling it! I would certainly love to see whatever other series' you get a chance to do. Are there any key books for the Sennett Paramount talkies, or the Phil Ryan talkies?

This made my day, Steve. Thanks for the effort. Here are some additions to some of these cast listings.

Christie Comedies

LOVE’S YOUNG SCREAM (5/12/1928) Add Gus Leonard, Glen Cavender, Tom Dempsey.

HOT SCOTCH (8/25/1928) add Joan Marquis.

Bobby Vernon Comedies

THE SOCK EXCHANGE (9/22/1928) Add Bert Swor, Jr., Tom Dempsey.

WHY GORILLAS LEAVE HOME a.k.a CHOOSE YOUR EXIT) (1/12/1929) Add Will Armstrong.

HIS ANGEL CHILD (2/16/1929) Add Margaret Lee, Molly Malone.

Jimmy Adams Comedies

SLIPPERY HEELS (6/16/1928) Add Joan Marquis. I've also seen a lobby card for this film with someone who looks a lot like Andy Clyde, although it could be Eddie Barry.

Billy Dooley Comedies

A GALLANT GOB (5/26/1928) Add Will Armstrong, Georgia O'Dell, Fat Lobee [who I suspect is really Marvin Lobach], Gloria Killian.

DIZZY DIVER (8/18/1928) Add Janet Laurell [or Lanrell], Eddie Clayton.

HAPPY HEELS (1/19/1929) Add George Burton, Bobby the Monk.

Confessions of a Chorus Girl

SKATING HOME (9/1/1928) Add Cliff Lancaster, Natalie Joyce.

NIFTY NUMBERS (1/5/1929) Add Margaret Lee, Aileen Carlyle, Georgia O'Dell.

Sandy MacDuff Comedies

HOT SCOTCH (8/25/1928) Add Joan Marquis.

SHOULD SCOTCHMEN MARRY? (12/22/1929) Add Margaret Lee, Aileen Carlyle.

I too would love to see the listings for the Hortons, the Christie Talking Plays, the Phil Ryans from 1930-31, and the Ryans and Gillstroms from 1933-34. Great, obscure stuff.
