Re: Extant Laurel Films
Hi David
If you can access Rob Stone's excellent book LAUREL OR HARDY, it will answer all your questions and provide a ton of other info to boot. As far as the specific titles you've asked about, these are the ones I've seen and know exist:
BEARS AND BAD MEN
THE PEST - MoMA
THE WEAK-END PARTY - 1 reel LOC
SCORCHING SANDS
SAVE THE SHIP
COLLARS AND CUFFS
THE HANDY MAN
WIDE OPEN SPACES - chunks
TWINS
There are thought to be chunks and sequences from NUTS IN MAY in Laurel's 1922 short MIXED NUTS. I think THE GARAGE and COWBOYS CRY FOR IT are working titles for other shorts. I'm sure Rob has the specifics on that, and may also know if the rumors about LOC having a dupe negative on WHEN KNIGHTS ARE COLD are true.
Most of the above Laurel titles are in the collection of Lobster Films, and Serge Bromberg has put most of them out on DVD in either Europe or America.

I've also seen THE WHOLE TRUTH and GAS AND AIR, but forgot to list them in my typing frenzy.

Does anyone know how Bromberg happen to aquire all of these titles? Is there a story behind it or just accumulated years of digging?

Serge is a friend of mine, and it's his overall love of the films. In all his years of digging he's had a real knack for finding lost films.

Re: Extant Laurel Films
LOC has the first reel of WHEN KNIGHTS WERE COLD, and, if they get their lab up and running in time, there's a good chance that it will be one of ROB STONES RARITIES st Slapsticon 2010.

COWBOYS CRY FOR IT is the working (and preview) title for SHOULD TALL MEN MARRY? THE GARAGE must be GAS & AIR.
So much for WHEN KNIGHTS WERE COLD being the big surprise of my show at SLAPSTICON 2010!! But yes you can bank on seeing the surviving reel of the film at S'10.
By the way, I am going to have some really cool stuff in my show.
