Even though the DVD collection came out in 2005, I just recently found out about it. Does anyone here have this set, and if so, is it worth the purchase? I've seen very few of their shorts, but what I have I've enjoyed. Many thanks!

Interesting looking set. Take note that it is Region 2.

I have the set and it's very good if you're hungry to see their work.
However...
It's a German TV series (a la Klamotten Kiste) and therefore has narration, sound effects and music. No inter-titles or English translation.
Hey, you can always watch it with the sound off and play the 'What the heck's going on now?' game.

If you're keen to see a sample, try this You Tube link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvQgXYtij0U
which is a 13 min mute extract (they've added some vintage music) of a 24 min "episode".
It's a sequence from their feature 'Hr.Tell og Son'

I haven't had time to watch the Youtube excerpt all the way through. Starts off kind of dull, but tosses off a great gag to close the opening sequence (deprived of arrows and slingshots, the short guy hits his target with a spit).

Don't think I'll be spending $80 getting the set, even though it seems intriguing. Too close to Christmas to blow that kind of money.

Yep, I know what you mean. I bought mine back in 2005 and it cost a bargain 20 euros then.

There are many good gags peppered throughout their films, especially the silent ones.
The infuriating thing is not being able to enjoy the whole movie.
I'd especially love to see the complete UK films they made -
ALF'S CARPET (1929) (48 minutes worth on DVD from the original 90) and
COCKTAILS (1928) (directed by one of my fave's Monty Banks) (48 mins from the original 67).
Ah well, maybe one day...

Thanks so much for your input on the set, Dave. I actually watched that extract a few days ago on Youtube. Like Jim mentioned, it starts off a bit slow but there are some nice gags throughout the clip. That's also good to know that the source is from a German TV series. I was afraid there weren't going to be any English subtitles but that's certainly not a deal breaker for me. The current price of it is though, perhaps I'll keep my eye on it to see if it ever drops. Thanks again for your help.

This box set will probably remain as good as it gets for quite some time -- the films are heavily edited, but at least skilfully so, and though incomplete, the vast amount of their features (they didn't ever do shorts, unless one counts the first few predecessor films) are covered, even including some talkies treated like silents. The recent price increase after years of sell-out pricing and the fact that it's not shipping from amazon, but rather a third party, suggests that this might go OOP soon.

P&P films have always been extremely scarce, even if you go back to the tape era -- I'm only aware of one French, three German, and two or three Danish VHS releases, so if interested, it might be good to grab the set while you can.

As an aside and in reference to another thread - Madsen was indeed one of those - few or many? - circus clowns who entered silent comedy. In fact, that's where he eventually returned (if so, apparently, in character as 'Patachon'), after Schenstrom's passing.
