Odd Robert Benchley clip

Postby Richard M Roberts » Thu Dec 11, 2014 7:11 pm

This piece in Youtube is fitting for the season because it's called CHRISTMAS IN THE ROARING TWENTIES, but the reason I'm really posting it is a clip inside of it.

Go to the 3:17 point and look at the clip of Robert Benchley serving a Christmas Turkey, what the heck is that? It looks like a clip from one of his Fox Movietone shorts, but do any of those exist apart from THE TREASURERS REPORT and SEX LIFE OF THE POLYP?

Any ideas?

Appeared in a newsreel, 23/12/29...

...but it's actually a Thanksgiving turkey. Clip is recycled from a Movietone newsreel from November of the previous year--described on the entertainment page of The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, 26/11/28: "The Fox Movietone News has several good things...An amusing thing is the ludicrous experience in Thanksgiving turkey carving by Robert Benchley, the noted critic and entertainer."

I had a feeling that might be what it was, especially as the Fox Movietone Newsreels have a much better rate of survival. Blackhawk came out with a number of the early Movietone Newsreels, I'll have to see if that is one of them.
