Marion Davies' THE FIVE O'CLOCK GIRL

Postby Steve Massa » Sat Nov 07, 2009 11:32 am

Hello everyone
Yesterday at the NYPL for the Performing Arts we came across about 20 photos from the never released early sound Marion Davies feature THE FIVE O'CLOCK GIRL. They came from the collection of actress Aileen Pringle (who kept a ton of photos of herself) and are mostly of Pringle alone modeling her Adrian gowns, but there are a few shots of her with Marion, Charles King (from THE BROADWAY MELODY), George K. Arthur, and William Austin.

The film was based on the 1928 Broadway musical by Guy Bolton & Fred Thompson / Bert Kalmar & Harry Ruby, and was directed by Robert Z. Leonard. According to Fred Lawrence Guiles' biography of Davies the film was shot after THE FLORADORA GIRL ('30) and gave Marion ample opportunity to sing and do imitations, but W. R. Hearst and L. B. Mayer fought over the rough cut and it was permanently shelved.

Wondered if anybody here has more info on the film?

Steve
