Friday February 5, 2010
At The Edison Theatre, in the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum
37417 Niles Blvd., Fremont, CA 94536: 510 494-1511
Showtime: 8:30 P.M.
Admission $12 general, $10 for museum members

I'm producing another "Pre-Code Follies" at Niles with Kitten On The Keys, as last year's show was way too much fun. This extravaganza will alternate the usual goofball pre-code movies with Kitten's performances of genuine 1920's and 1930's songs. Among the classic cartoons and two-reelers from 1929-1934:

ANY RAGS (1932) Fleischer Talkartoon featuring Betty Boop
STRATOS-FEAR (1933) Willie Whopper cartoon, directed by Grim Natwick
THE WORLD'S AFFAIR (1933) Scrappy cartoon, directed by Dick Huemer
A CROOK'S TOUR (1933) Hal Roach "All-Star" Comedy featuring Douglas Wakefield, Billy Nelson, Baby Alice, Richard Cramer and every other thuggy-looking character actor in Hollywood who wasn't spoken for at the time of the shoot
RED NOSES (1932) Hal Roach Comedy co-starring Zasu Pitts and Thelma Todd
YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING (1931) Merrie Melodie cartoon (#3 in the series), directed by Rudolf Ising

The Pre-Code Follies flyer is on the museum website at http://www.nilesfilmmuseum.org/precode_02-2010.htm.

On the following weekend, Richard Roberts returns to Niles with another Mid-WInter Comedy Festival, chock-full of silent and early talkie rarities - and always a great time. http://www.nilesfilmmuseum.org/mid-winter_10_sked.htm

I can substitute another two-reeler for RED NOSES. What I'd really like to find is STORY CONFERENCE, the Lillian Roth Vitaphone short in which she sings "Little Alimony Sal".
