Is there ever a rhyme or reason for pie throwing antics?
I would submit there is but who knew PETA was writing
film reviews back in 1921.

Well, the monkey scene is a bit disconcerting, because the animal does indeed look uncomfortable. And of course the rhyme and reason for pie-throwing is when you have a pie, and someone needs to have it thrown at them.
RICHARD M ROBERTS (Who BTW, is about to sit down and run the 1925 WIZARD OF OZ for someone who, despite warnings, wants to see it. Poor Soul.)

I wish I had editing skills- the 1925 Wizard of Oz has enough good bits that with some very imaginative recutting and retitling I could get a funny 1 or 2 reeler out of it- but I'd have to scrap the Oz story and concoct a new one.
