Two items came up when I ran the details on Clarke-Renalle through a newspaper search. In the Mansfield News, Nov. 23 1923:

Grace Cunard will replace Rosemary Theby in "The Elk's Tooth," the Renalles, Inc. picture. The cast includes Kate Price, Peter Burke, George McDaniels, David Dunbar, Fred de Silva, John Herdman, Biunsky Hirman [presumably Bynunsky Hyman], Lillian Hall and Nancy Caswell.

And an interesting widely syndicated column by Hubbard Keavy, "Screenlife in Hollywood", January 1935:

He is a studio doorman in the daytime--"and glad to get it." Nights, he writes and before long he expects "to hit it off again."

Eight years ago tragedy came into the life of Capt. Harry Clarke-Renalle, a successful scenarist, on the eve of the day he was to sign a contract to release pictures produced by himself through the M.G.M. organization. A little gasoline stove exploded, injuring him so badly that he was confined to his bed for more than three years.

Another four years went slowly by before Clarke-Renalle's burns had healed sufficiently for him to attempt any kind of work, however light. Friends looked after him, he admits, when the little fortune he had accumulated to produce pictures ran out. For the last several months this one time English army officer has been employed by the R.K.O. studio as a doorman. He tends the door of one of the big sound stages, admitting only those who have passes or a right to enter the stage.

"Well, it's not so bad," Clarke-Renalle says, his speech still tinctured with the accent of England despite his 30 years' residence in America. "I might be dead, y'know. Second or third near one."

He indicates his empty left sleeve. Forty years ago in Africa, a poison dart hit Clarke-Renalle in the shoulder. To save his life, his arm had to be amputated.

A few years after his discharge from the army, Clarke-Renalle began a tour of the world, which ended in Detroit when he met Rex Beach, who urged him to stay in this country. Clarke-Renalle went to work on a newspaper, meanwhile continuing to write for a daily newspaper in London. He came to Hollywood 16 years ago, when the movies were something new. Renalle has been here since.

He says he's "sold" ideas to two directors at R.K.O. studio and that they definitely have promised him they will buy the stories when he develops them satisfactorily.

"I'm 64, but I don't feel it," Clarke-Renalle says proudly. "And I don't think I look it."

"I can peck at a typewriter with this one fairly good hand"--it still is frightfully scarred--"and I can fill my pipe. I can even drive a car--when I have one." And with great optimism, Clarke-Renalle continued:

"After I really get back on my feet, I don't believe I'll hire a chauffeur."

I believe the only Sunshine that Archie Mayo directed was SPRING FEVER (12/30/23) with Harry Sweet. That makes it likely that the Lew Brice title directed by Erle Kenton was THE INCOME TAX COLLECTOR (12/2/23) and the comedy that Slim Summerville directed was THE RIDING MASTER (12/16/23) with Poodles Hanneford. The last two are not as certain, however, because Summerville directed at least one other Hanneford comedy in late 1923 and Erle Kenton appears to have directed three Lew Brice titles at this time.

James Cruze's TO THE LADIES was another starring comedy feature for Edward Everett Horton based on a George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly play.

The comedy STEPHEN STEPS OUT was Douglas Fairbanks, Junior's first film.

George O'Brien and Mary Astor both had early supporting roles in the Thomas Meighan comedy feature WOMAN-PROOF.

Anybody know anything about the McNamara Studios?

More info on what was going on with Principal Pictures during the period when Harry Langdon was filming there. I see here we have Langdon confirmed as a scenarist on A TOUGH TENDERFOOT/HORACE GREELEY, JR.

The Henry Lehrman directed A COMEDY OF TERRORS was the seventh entry in the second series of "Fighting Blood" boxing shorts.

Eddie Hearn had appeared in several comedies around this time but I can find no evidence that the film titled THE SANDPILE listed as "Preparing" ever got made.

Although there are no story credits listed here for the James W. Horne directed Douglas MacLean comedy THE YANKEE CONSUl it's well known that Raymond Griffith and Lewis Milestone worked on the film's adaptation.
I know that cut-downs of this film survive. It might be interesting to see what could be assembled of the film for a future Slapsticon showing.

Here's a more detailed breakdown on what was going on at the Roach Studio this week in 1923.

The feature still in production at this time was KING OF THE WILD HORSES.

The Will Rogers unit bounced back and forth between trying to wrap filming on their current short-GEE WHIZ GENEVIEVE (more shooting would be required later), doing additional shooting on Will's previous short-UNCENSORED MOVIES and starting shooting of TWO WAGONS, BOTH COVERED. A busy week that must have left Will wondering which movie he was shooting on any given day.

Snub finished up FRIEND HUSBAND and immediately started shooting THE BIG IDEA.

Len Powers did not actually do any shooting on the Dippy Doo Dads comedies this week having wrapped up his previous short the week before.

The our Gang unit was filming BIG BUSINESS.

Stan Laurel was in the midst of shooting MOTHER'S JOY.

NOT mentioned (again) in the above production schedule was the Spat Family series which began filming, under the direction of Jay Howe, their fifth film-THE DARKEST HOUR this week.

____________________________________________

The comedy THE NEAR LADY featured supporting roles by Hank Mann and Kate Price. A Florence Drew was also in the picture. I've been wondering if she was related to Sidney Drew, who did have a slightly older cousin named Florence.

THE NOBLEST ROMAN was released as the comedy A MILLION TO BURN.

ALL FOR THE LOVE OF GLORIA was a comedy-drama that was also known as NO QUESTIONS ASKED while in production but was ultimately released as HIS MYSTERY GIRL.

The film listed here as THE VITAL QUESTION was a joint USA-Canadian production. It was released in 1924 as WHY GET MARRIED? The film's star, Andree Lafayette, was a French actress who's only film prior to this was the 1923 version of TRILBY. After this film she returned to France and all of her remaining motion pictures were made in Europe. The film's director Paul Cazeneuve was also French. He had been in Hollywood for a few years prior to this and had written the 1921 comedy WHY TRUST YOUR HUSBAND?
