Who’s Who and What’s What in Filmland This Week
Pre-eclipse weather, or whatever it is, is responsible for an almost too realistic scene in “Her Temporary Husband,” First National picture directed by John McDermott.
Owen Moore, Tully Marshall, and Sydney Chaplin, all of them bearded, hide in a long box-trunk when the villains close in on them.
Three men, with thick greasepaint and heavy false whiskers crowded into a 90-degrees-in-the-shade day!
After the villains pass through, the three are supposed to come up out of the box, foreheads beaded from terror.
Terror is registered by all three-and perspiration!
One can guess that glycerine was not needed in this scene.
Fred Esmelton has just received a cable to come to London to play the featured role in the late Frank Bacon's great play “Lightnin,'” which is to be staged there in addition to “Three Wise Fools,” and other noteworthy successes. Esmelton says he is too busy with his role in Johnny Hines' production of “Conductor 1492” for Warner Brothers, to think of leaving Hollywood.
A wire has just been received from Finis Fox, who stopped off at Denver to show his “Bag and Baggage” to general manager R. R. Beatty, of the Finis Fox organization and a group of Colorado exhibitors there, stating the picture scored tremendously. Finis will go to New York within a few days to arrange for the New York opening.

More info on the crafting of comedy scenes for HER TEMPORARY HUSBAND. Does anyone know if this Syd Chaplin comedy is still extant?

Re: CAMERA Comedy Clippings, September 22, 1923
Jack White comedies do not specialize in bathing girls, but they have the youngest “diving marvel” in captivity. Bonnie Barrett, two years old, says she is all set for the aquatic events of the Olympic games when they are held in Los Angeles.
Garry O'Dell has had another taste of working in comedies. He just finished a heavy role in a Jimmy Aubrey fun-film at the Big U lot.
Bobby Vernon started another of his two-reel comedies the other day, which is being directed by Al Christie.

The Mark "Sanderich," shown working as an AD on the Fox monkey comedy above, is undoubtedly Mark Sandrich, who in a little over a decade, would be directing at RKO where he turned out a couple of Wheeler and Woolsey's best feature comedies as well as some of Fred and Ginger's finest films. Between those years he directed many a comedy short, including several in both the Educational Lupino Lane series and the RKO Clark and McCollough series.
Robert Thornby, of the Thornby-Newton productions listed above, had entered films as an actor for Vitagraph in 1911. By 1913 he had also started to direct some of the Sandy and Shorty comedies that he was starring in with George Stanley. When that series ended in 1914 he departed Vitagraph, and acting, for Keystone where he continued working, behind the camera, directing some of the Little Billy comedies. His tenure at Keystone was short-lived and he soon left for Sterling where he continued to direct Little Billy Jacobs.
After Sterling went under he surfaced again as a director in 1916 and continued to work steadily, directing dramas, war pictures, westerns, romances and very few comedies (the 1923 action-comedy THE DRIVIN' FOOL, featuring his old Vitagraph co-hort, Wally Van, being one of the few exceptions) until this point in time in 1923.
I couldn't find anything about his work as a producer and suspect that he may have gone bust attempting it as he doesn't seem to have worked in films again until 1926 when he pops up at the Christie studio directing comedies with Jimmie Adams and Neal Burns.
His return to films was not long lived though and the final credit I could find for him was a 1927 comedy short for Madeline Brandeis Productions entitled YOUNG HOLLYWOOD and featuring Tim Holt, Erich Von Stroheim, Jr., and Wallace Reid, Jr.

William Beaudine, shown above directing the J. K. McDonald feature MISUNDERSTOOD (which I'm pretty sure was released as BOY OF MINE-with Ben Alexander and Dot Farly in the cast) at the Hollywood Studios, directed quite a few comedies in the silent era.
He was in one of his busiest periods at this time and would have seven features released the following year-six of them comedies. Among the actors that would be working for him in those pictures were Bebe Daniels, Lee Moran, Marie Prevost, Clara Bow, Monte Blue, Lila Lee, Eugene Pallette, Lloyd Hamilton, Patsy Ruth Miller, Victor Potel, Harry Todd, Dan Mason, Matt Moore and Dorothy Devore.

Here's a few more details on what was going on at the Roach Studio during the final week of September 1923.
The Jackman brothers were still working on the KING OF THE WILD HORSES feature.
The Will Rogers unit kept busy shooting his current picture, TWO WAGONS, BOTH COVERED.
The one reel comedy companies wrapped up Snub Pollard's THE BIG IDEA (which would be Snub's last starring role at Roach for some months), work began on both the THE MAN PAYS (with the Dippy Doo Dads) under Len Powers' direction and, toward the end of the week, on the second of Charley Chase's starring films-A PERFECT LADY under direction of Charley's brother Jimmy Parrott.
Our Gang's THE BUCCANEERS also began shooting toward the end of the week.
Ralph Cedar began directing Stan Laurel's new comedy-NEAR DUBLIN about mid-week.
Still not mentioned on CAMERA'S production charts was the Spat Family series, whose film then in production-THE DARKEST HOUR, would prove to be their smoothest production so far, being the only one of their first five comedies shot that would not require retakes.
