What was Samuel Johnson's comment on seeing a dancing pig? "How wonderful! I wish it wasn't possible!"

Re: It's Here!

I'm not prone to hyperbole, but I think this looks the best of any versions I've seen. It even has more pie fight footage, if I'm not mistaken, and that entire sequence looks pristine. The only iffy part was some outlining I think I saw during the fight sequence (when the actors were standing in fro...

Re: BUSTER KEATON vs R.E.M.

If that sample is any indication, it's a hard pass from me. It's the scoring equivalent of adding raisins to potato salad. I wasn't fond of the score in the Kino edition, and I'm not holding out any hopes for this.

Re: Mafia Webinar: Collecting Classic Comedy Films pt 3

Definitely worth a listen. You brought back a lot of memories from the seventies and eighties, when I first started buying 8mm. And the names! Enrique J. Bouchard, Bill Bissonette. After fifty years, I'm still having fun buying and learning.

Re: Nitrateville Answer Dept: THE TOY THAT GREW UP

I remember this show quite fondly. IIRC, this provided my first exposure to DREAMS OF A RAREBIT FIEND, THE BIG SWALLOW, MR. HURRY UP OF NEW YORK, Thomas Jefferson as RIP VAN WINKLE, and countless others. I also seem to remember that, at the end of an episode on Mack Sennett, as the host made the out...

Re: Peter Marshall RIP

Its been a while since I've seen it, but I believe he and Tommy Noonan make an appearance in the 1951 WB film STARLIFT as soldier/entertainers, playing themselves, if I recall correctly. As an addendum, Marshall wrote a very entertaining behind the scenes memoir called BACKSTAGE WITH THE ORIGINAL HO...

Re: Roberts on the Radio: The Laurel and Hardy Podcast

Remember living with jump cuts? In my early childhood I realized the video and audio were not synchronized with the splice and wondered why. Or cue marks? There's an entire digital generation that couldn't tell you where the reel(s) originally ended. But we knew when it was coming up, regardless if...

Re: Roberts on the Radio: The Laurel and Hardy Podcast

The Viacom "Vitaphony" version (forgive the pun) was one of my first purchases, too. I still have it; never was able to synchronize, but had fun trying. Scott Macgillivray makes an excellent case for the later films. My take is, while they're generally not up to the standard of their best ...

Re: Roberts on the Radio: The Laurel and Hardy Podcast

Hi Richard, I'm just about finished with Part 2 (I think it's Episode 62), and it was so enjoyable, it prompted me to subscribe to the entire podcast. Sounds like there's much to look forward to as I visit the previous episodes. As always, I enjoyed your perspective as to your favorites, as well as ...
