BELOW THE SEA (1933) Fay Wray

An unlikely trio: a WWI German submarine commander, a deep-sea diver and Lily, and a Madame in a house of ill repute, form an alliance to retrieve a sunken treasure. Ralph Bellamy scowls through high action as a strong and courageous diver enchanted by ingenue Fay Wray. Esther Howard in a tour de force as the tough old gal who knows a doublecross when she sees it coming.

This has one of FrederiK Vogeding's best parts as the evil captain. He was a Dutch Actor who made some silent films in Germany, worked on Broadway, then ended up working in Hollywood when talkies came in, mostly in lesser roles. Of course, he began to get jobs playing Nazi's from the late 30's onward, but unfortunately died of a heart attack in 1942.

One of his other interesting roles is as the German Police Detective assisting Warner Oland in CHARLIE CHAN AT THE OLYMPICS set during the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936.

Sadly, the two-strip Technicolor sequence of Ocean Life that was a part of this film has not turned up., so there's just a fade out and fade up where that sequence should be in circulating prints.
