Hmm, in his review of THE WALKING DEAD, the old Gabbit refers to Director Michael Curtiz having started much of his reputation as Warner's resident horror stylist in the 30's with SVENGALI (1931) with John Barrymore:

Really Michael, I think Archie Mayo would be surprised to hear that, because he's the one who actually directed the film.
