THE TONIGHT SHOW (12/17/1969) The Wedding of Tiny Tim

You've heard about it, maybe seen a short clip, here's the entire show.

From New York, Johnny Carson hosts the wedding of Tiny Tim and Miss Vicki, along with guests Florence Henderson, Phyllis Diller and Nick Lucas, who gets to perform "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" for the newlyweds.

It was one of the highest rated broadcasts of the time, in Tiny Tim's fifteen minutes of genuine fame. So few complete TONIGHT SHOWS exist from the 60's, but you know they saved this one.

Looking at it today, I'm most happy to see Nick Lucas.

Nick Lucas was a pretty amazing fellow. My friend Jim Bedoian knew him pretty well and told me how nice he was and how much energy he had for his age. Nick continued performing through most of the 1970's, here he is at the Mayfiar Music Hall in 1975:

And here he is on a Nelson Riddle tribute in 1981, a year before he died:

I used to have a 1934 Gibson Nick Lucas special guitar back in my guitar playing/collecting days, they go for a pretty penny these days, more than I got when I sold it decades ago.

But I do have a lot of his Brunswick 78's in my collection, and a few later record albums. He's always been a favorite.

Johnny Carson had booked Nick on THE TONIGHT SHOW in September of 69, when Tiny Tim had his hit with "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" and then had him back for the wedding. I'm sure it boosted Nick's bookings.
