Bob Newhart RIP

No one lives forever -- except, perhaps, Shirley MacLaine. This is where we ring down the final curtain for Filmdom's finest.

Bob Newhart RIP

Postby Richard M Roberts » Thu Jul 18, 2024 6:20 pm

Another Funny One Gone. Damn.

94 was a very good run though, Bob Newhart was a stand-up and sit-com comedy legend, but he was also a very really good actor in the handful of movies he made over the years: a good fill-in if you couldn't get Henry Fonda for Major Major in CATCH-22 (1970), a good TV movie with Gene Wilder called THURSDAY'S GAME (1974), playing Walter Matthau's side-kick in a forgotten but actually pretty-good remake of LITTLE MISS MARKER (1980).

And he was interestingly great at playing snotty villains in films like COLD TURKEY (1970) and a forgotten little gem called HOT MILLIONS (1968), one of Peter Ustinov's starring comedies in which Bob plays Mr. Gnatpole, corporate and personal nemesis to embezzler-computer expert Ustinov, who is Daffy Duck to Ustinov's Bugs Bunny in this highly recommended by me film.

Starred in two of the best sitcoms of all time, and beat both George Jessel and Shelly Berman in the stand-up one-sided telephone conversations.

Hope Rickles met you at the Pearly Gates. Rest in Peace Bob.

Memorable Newhart lines:

"Dimes...dimes were cheaper!"
"Same to you, fella!"
"You...you wanna change 'four score and seven' to...to EIGHTY-SEVEN?"

Sui generis, for sure. Bless him for all those years of laughs, and never over staying his welcome.
