A Faux Bud?

Founding Nitratevillian Mike Gebert recently posted his review of the most recent Cinesation and dropped this little bombshell:

"It was preceded by Mystery at the Old Mill (**), a freshly restored, modestly amusing 1916 Lloyd Hamilton comedy about mad doctors (billed as a Ham and Bud, but James Cozart of the Library of Congress later mentioned to me that he didn’t actually think that was the real Bud in the Bud role— Proto-Bud, maybe). "

A fake Bud? Gotta watch that again.

With all due respects to Messrs Cozart and Gebert, it's the genuine Bud in MIDNIGHT AT THE OLD MILL.

I think they came to that conclusion because Bud was relegated to the sidelines for
much of the short. Did Hamilton begin flexing his creative powers around this time?
