1948: Erich von Stroheim returns to Vienna for the first time since 1930 for the filming of LE SIGNAL ROUGE, a French film directed by Ernst Neubach. Together with him is the rest of the cast: his partner Denise Vernac; Claude Chenard; and Franck Villard.
Denise later recalled that she had never seen Von look as despondent as he did when touring the ruins of the city where he was born.
The newsreel narrator still speaks in the strident "achtung! quack-quack!" voice of the Die Deutsche Wochenschau era, a type of speaking heard today only when spoofing old-time German authority figures and ironically, Erich von Stroheim himself.
