Harry Langdon Outtakes and Costume Tests

Postby Rob Farr » Sat Apr 11, 2026 6:07 pm

From HALLALUJAH I'M A BUM, courtesy of Sabucat:

Outtakes (silent): https://youtu.be/BW8wGNrkfTI?si=xvGZQEg84SIs2m1r
Costume tests: https://youtu.be/VFuKd94D41U?si=tHL6RAFNKnqdEUVZ

Interesting that Harry's makeup in the costume test is different that it would be in the final film. Here he has several days worth of stubble on his chin.

The costume tests are from the earlier Chester Erskine-directed version of the film, which is why we see Roland Young in costume for the part Frank Morgan played in the final re-shot released version.

The outtakes are from the later Lewis Milestone-directed reshoot, you can see Billy West, Dorothea Wolbert and George Ovey in the background. There's more of this footage about, I saw nearly forty-five minutes of it years ago. I especially remember some footage where Langdon keeps blowing a line and Jolson really lets loose abuse on him. Ol' Jolie looks like he wants to punch Lewis Milestone in this footage. Such a charming individual.
